PLANNING REPORT
DATE: September 12, 2012
CASE: SP2012-004
SUBJECT: Special Use Permit for Various Sign Issues at Irondale
APPLICANT: Irondale High School
REQUEST&BACKGROUND
Irondale High School is requesting a special use permit in order to proceed with two permanent
sign projects on campus. Because Irondale is a school use in a residential zoning district, thus
specially permitted, it must undergo the special use permit process in order to make certain
improvements to the property, including exterior sign improvements. The two proposed sign
projects consist of:
1) Replacing the existing scoreboard and relocating it to the east side (from the west side) of
the football field/track. The proposed scoreboard will be freestanding, where its current
location is affixed to the side of a building.
2) Install a new, larger, lit "Home of the Knights" sign at the location of the existing
scoreboard and small "Irondale Knights" sign. The current and proposed location of this
sign is affixed to the side of a building on the west side of the football field/track and the
existing "Irondale Knights" sign is not lit.
The school's district's sign contractor contacted City staff in August regarding the change out of
these two signs. At that time, City staff informed Irondale that a special use permit was
necessary due to the zoning of the property. The school was not prepared to go through this
process, however submitted an application. This has caused delay in completion of the work.
ATTACHMENTS
A—Resolution
B—Project Location Map
C—Zoning Map
D—Aerial Photo
E—Neighborhood Notification Map
F—Applicant Narratives (emails)
G—Proposed Scoreboard Sign
H—Proposed Cabinet Sign
I—Picture of Existing Signs
J—Special Use Permit Criteria Worksheet
K—Existing Conditions Survey Detail
L—Larger Detail Site Plan(aerial photo)
FINDINGS
Section 4-030 (1).
