One
small tractor backhoe, a 310 John Deere model, does the digging, and a 710 John Deere does
the frost breaking and the tamping. This works on a majority of the water main breaks, but
there are times where our small tractor backhoe will not do the job due to depth or space
constraints, like digging in an alley or needing to only take up one lane of traffic. A wheeled
excavator will do the job where the small tractor backhoe will not. The 2007 John Deere 710
tractor backhoe is not slated to be replaced until 2019. The cost estimated to replace it in 2019
is $163,800. There is a balance of $119,600 that is budgeted to date for the replacement of that
unit and an additional $7,700 for the frost breaker (for a total of $127,300). Even though this
piece of equipment is being replaced early, with this purchase a savings of $28,508 would be
realized.
