Councilmember Jacobsen suggested the Council consolidate the number of cars they ride in for the Stockyard
Days parade.

Mayor Johnson stated the Councilmembers could ride in a City truck or could walk the parade route together.

Councilmember Bauman supported two Councilmembers to a vehicle.

Councilmember Burg stated she did not like riding in the back of a pickup stating the starting and stopping was
difficult.

Councilmember Strub was in favor of the Council all riding together in the same vehicle.

Councilmember Burg recalled riding in a flatbed trailer as a kid in parades and stated this may be a better
option.

Schlichting indicated the City had trailers available and could come up with something creative for the City
Council to ride on.

Recycling Contract Extension Discussion
Hatch stated the City was on its last year of its three-year recycling contract. He explained that Gundlach had
an update for the Council.

Gundlach provided the Council with a presentation on the City’s recycling program and proposed contract
extension. She noted the original contract was negotiated in 2000. Staff was recommending the Council
pursue a contract extension with the City’s current hauler versus an RFP. She reported residents appear to be
happy with the City’s current service provider. She explained the options available for the extension were a
five-year or seven-year agreement. The rates for each of the agreements were reviewed in detail. Staff
recommended the Council authorize staff to work with Allied/Republic Sanitation on a seven-year contract
extension. She then provided the Council with a handout on how many pounds per resident the City was
recycling in comparison to each community within the County.

Councilmember Strub asked if there would be an opportunity for the City to receive additional SCORE grants
in the future. He questioned if there were any opportunities for PREC to pursue additional recycling in the
City. Gundlach stated SCORE funding was based on population. She indicated the City may be able to
receive additional grant money from the County if staff were to make application.

Mayor Johnson believed it would be advantageous to get the City’s businesses involved in recycling.

Councilmember Jacobsen asked if organics would be allowed in the new contract. Gundlach stated the current
contract did not allow for organics. She reported the extension would also not collect organics due to the fact
there was no place for the organics materials.

Hatch believed that when there were enough commercial organics vendors in the marketplace, that there would
be a greater push for organics collection.

Councilmember Strub supported the seven-year contract with Republic. He was in favor of the County data
being passed along to New Brighton residents.
