Even if we have our own personal device, most employers prefer that
you use the work device instead of your personal device. The
Commissioner believes the City is being proactive and starting early
which he believes is a positive thing.
Having an iPad could replace the binders they have with all the maps.
It is understood that the iPad would use a certain software and if it
were broadcast through an e-mail and tied to a particular application,
then an iPad may be what is needed.
A Commissioner inquired of Council Liaison Burg what her experience has
been with moving to an iPad.
Council Liaison Burg stated that having iPads saves much staff time. You
would be using iLegislate which would give you access to all past history to
look back at Commission meetings on the iPad. She had boxes of papers at
home that she no longer needs and is able to do research right on her iPad. It
does save time in looking for things. It is a time saver and helps to have
everything in one place.
An inquiry was made as to why the iPad was chosen, when a Microsoft based
device would work and is less expensive. Council Liaison Burg commented
that staff did a lot of research into which product would work best for City
needs. The Council did try different products before a decision was made.
Council Liaison Burg stated it is possible that Commissioners will not be
getting brand new devices, but probably someone who had their device
upgraded, will be passed down to you.
Director Breuer commented that instead of all the park maps in a binder, you
could find them on your iPad or have easy access to the Strategic Plan
information. Also it would be compliant with the data practices. Possibly this
would be implemented after April 1St, because term limits are ending and new
commissioners may be on board. There will need to be training on this also.
• Another comment was that when someone sees something in the park
that needs attention, you could take a photo and send it in right away
while at the park.
Council Liaison Burg restated that staff time is saved. The Council packets
used to require an entire day to prepare. You will have the ability to access
information at your fingertips. There is also the benefit of uniformity of
equipment throughout the City. Once you start using it, you will appreciate the
benefit of having it.
b. Schedule a Date for 2016 Park Tour
Commissioner Frischman stated that knowing 2016 will bring discussion on
the New Brighton Exchange Parks, she suggested the July meeting so that
would give commissioners time to discuss with and engage residents on their
ideas and desires for that area, before the parks tour. She felt it important to
get as much public involvement as possible on the New Brighton Exchange
Parks.
January 6, 2016 Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission Minutes Page 2
