Chair Kunesh-Podein felt July could interfere with vacations and it is hot. She <br />would prefer the tour would take place at the June meeting. <br />Commissioner Justin felt perhaps the New Brighton Exchange discussion <br />could happen before June and then incorporate that information into the other <br />parks during the tour. <br />Chair Kunesh-Podein took a vote on the date that would work best for the park <br />tour for PREC members. Seven voted for having the tour on June 1 st and two <br />voted for the July meeting. The park tour will be scheduled for June 1 st <br />Director Breuer stated the Park Tour starts at about 4pm with the meeting to <br />follow. It could end at 9 or 10 pm. <br />VI. Announcements <br />a. Council Report — Council Member Burg <br />• The Council has not had any actions since December when the budget <br />was approved. <br />• Attended the Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce legislative <br />breakfast. Chair Kunesh-Podein also attended. The speaker focused <br />on the Somali culture since Hennepin and Anoka Counties have the <br />highest population. Talked about education and that is important to <br />help keep the young people from joining terrorist groups. <br />• Letter in the mail regarding water. It went to all residents. The letter is <br />also on our web page. <br />• Council and staff have team building this weekend. <br />• Volunteer Red Cross blood drive. March 30 is next one. <br />• Jan 12th next Council meeting. Will hear updates from Commissions. <br />• Applications being taken for commissions. Liaisons usually change to <br />other commissions. Commission members are truly valued by all <br />Council members and by the community. <br />A Commission member stated that the online commission application was very <br />difficult to complete. He hoped it could be made easier. <br />Council Member Burg stated the Hansen Park project was approved at the <br />Council meeting following the Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission <br />approval. <br />b. Chair Updates <br />• Commissioner Kunesh-Podein wanted to bring attention to all the <br />winter activities available through Parks and Recreation. <br />• United Theological Seminary has agreed for their site to be used as a <br />farmers market. Gathering individuals, businesses and others <br />interested in helping to bring this together. <br />• The snowshoe shuffle will be held at Long Lake Park. Proceeds from <br />the event go toward a camp for kids. The event is February 6 at 9:30 <br />am. Chili feed after at Eastside Neighborhood Services in Northeast <br />Minneapolis with an auction. <br />• Minnesota League of Women Voters just published a study on bees. <br />January 6, 2016 Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission Minutes Page 3 <br />
