Councilmember Strub indicated he looked forward to hearing from PREC on their recommendation for the <br />Eagles Nest. He requested staff have legal replacement equipment onsite prior to the demolition of the current <br />equipment. He questioned how the City gathered feedback from the public on the likes and dislikes within the <br />Eagles Nest. Bach described how feedback was gathered on ballots from families that had used the Eagles <br />Nest. He was confident that the bids received would include the list of needs and wants for the project and <br />would be evaluated based on which vendor best utilized the space both horizontally and vertically. <br />Councilmember Bauman inquired how many people completed the survey. Bach stated 120 surveys were <br />completed. <br />Mayor Johnson supported Councilmember Strub's suggestion and wanted to be ensured the new equipment <br />was a safe and legal place for children to play. <br />New Brighton Lions Park Playground Update <br />Lotter provided the Council with an update on the New Brighton Lions Park playground. He reported there <br />was a neighborhood group that has been working with staff and PREC to ensure the City has its first accessible <br />playground. <br />Chris Wallace commented on the history of Lions Park. He reviewed potential playground design options and <br />discussed the input that had been received from the task force. He reviewed the preferred playground plan and <br />reiterated that it would be fully accessible. He stated the playground would be surrounded by a rubber safety <br />surface and not woodchips. He commented on the expense of the equipment and noted the project had a <br />$40,000 shortfall. <br />Councilmember Bauman questioned the height of the playground structure. Wallace reported the highest deck <br />was 12 feet in height. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen asked what the maintenance would be for the poured in place ground structure. <br />Wallace stated pressure washing would be required and a pro -rated warranty was being offered for the life of <br />the play structure. <br />Councilmember Burg inquired if the playground would have swings. Wallace reviewed the different types of <br />swings that would be available at the park. <br />Mayor Johnson understood there was a group of residents trying to raise money for the project, <br />Councilmember Burg recommended that all donors making a contribution to this project be made aware that <br />their contribution is tax deductible. <br />Councilmember Strub requested further information on the task force and the individuals providing input on <br />this project and asked if any of the parents had children with special needs. Stenlein reported one of the <br />parents involved had a child with special needs which led to the proposed ramps and swings. Wallace added <br />that this same family was seeking donations for the playground project. <br />Councilmember Strub recalled that the playground at Turtle Lake Elementary in Shoreview went through this <br />same process. He understood the PTA was very interested in getting the community involved in the planning <br />process. He asked if staff had spoken with any of these individuals. Stenlein stated he had not contacted any <br />of the individuals from the elementary school PTA but stated the proposed fundraising efforts stemmed from <br />this project. <br />
