City Council/Teambuilding Retreat Report <br />January 7, 2017 <br />Report prepared by Barbara Strandell 7 <br />Using the brainstorming ideas (above), the groups were asked to identify key themes for telling the <br />New Brighton Story: Where would you begin? What would you emphasize? <br /> <br />#1 - Family, Proximity (Work group: Brian Strub, Dan Olson, Craig Schlichting) <br />⇒ Schools, Lake, Night out, Parkway, Hidden treasure, Best kept secret <br /> <br />#2 - Safe Community, next to downtown (Work group: Gina Bauman, Trevor Hamdorf, Tony Paetznick) <br /> <br />#3 - Urban/suburban wedge (Work group: Paul Jacobsen, Andre Bart, Janice Gundlach) <br />⇒ Safe, progressive thinking, Life cycle housing (not too much); Live, work, play <br /> <br />#4 - Location (both downtowns; MSP; National Night Out top 3) (Work group: Val Johnson, Brenda Davitt, <br />Patty Isaacson) <br />⇒ Best kept secret - Res. family parks <br />⇒ Small town feel; innovative, cutting edge <br />⇒ Community Center; HL and SEC <br />⇒ Water solution <br /> <br />#5 - Location 694/494 (Work group: Mary Burg, Sandy Breuer, Jason Hicks) <br />⇒ Jobs <br />⇒ Small town feel, Good Neighborhoods, Safe, National Night Out <br />⇒ Schools. Community Center <br /> <br /> These ideas and assets are to be considered in a future Visioning process. Below are the ideas discussed. <br />Clearly location/proximity and sense of community lead the list. <br />_________________________________________ <br />The Pre-retreat Survey <br />Prior to the workshop retreat, the City Council and Senior Staff were surveyed about their views on the <br />current status of the city and future goals and priorities. Below is the list of the questions asked. Answers <br />were compiled and presented by the facilitator for discussion throughout the day. <br /> <br /> <br />Survey Question for the New Brighton City Council/Staff Retreat 2017 <br />Q1: Accomplishments: In your opinion, what are the City's biggest accomplishments in the last year? <br />Q2: Goals: What do you see as New Brighton’s Long Term Goals (next 3-5 years)? Please list several goals or goal areas you <br />would like the City/Council to achieve. <br />Q3: Priorities: In your opinion, what specific objectives or short-term priorities should the Staff be working on over the next <br />1 - 3 years? These objectives or priorities may support or be related to your goals. <br />Q4: Barriers: Identify the biggest obstacles or barriers the City will face in its efforts to meet your goals and priorities. They <br />can be both internal and external. <br />Q5: Current Strategic Priorities: Here are our current Strategic Priorities, please assess relevancy going forward. <br />Q6: Sacred Cows: In your opinion, what are the “sacred cows” (an idea, custom, department, role or person held, <br />especially unreasonably, to be above questioning or doubt), if any, in New Brighton? Why? <br />Q7: Challenges: What do you see as the biggest challenges facing our City in the next two years? <br />Q8: Vision: Describe your long term Vision for the City of New Brighton. (Do not worry about word-smithing, just state your <br />idea(s)) <br />Q9: Council – Staff Relations: What suggestions do you have to improve Council - Staff relations? <br />Q10: Topics: Please indicate any other specific issues, ideas or topics you would like to discuss at the Council/Staff retreat <br />on January 7. <br />
