8

this site or another. We have looked at other sites.

Chair Fields asked the Commission what they need to make a decision. Do we need
more information from the Parks and Recreation staff?

Commissioner Quade stated we have already looked at every park.

Chair Fields stated we have new information and now we should relook at other park
possibilities.

Commissioner Quade commented that the Irondale tennis courts are vacant most of the
summer. There does not seem to be a scarcity of courts in New Brighton.

Commissioner Axberg, commented that she lives in the area and is relatively new to the
commission. She is hoping for more information. She does not have the history that
most of her colleagues have. She has limited information. How can we have pickleball
and make sure it fits in, in terms of noise. How does that look, what have other
communities done, how does it fit with our programming. What are the alternatives?
Would like to find a solution that meets both needs.

Commissioner Eischen stated this Commission has been very thoughtful and tried to be
very transparent for residents and the reason you received a letter about this meeting.
Thank you very much for participating. We now may look at different areas in a different
light.

Commissioner Axberg inquired if we want to look at an existing tennis site. Acting
Director Jason Hicks commented yes, for budget reasons. It would be cost more if we
had to start new and do the sub soil, fencing, etc.

Chair Fields asked if there were enough funds to start new and create a new site for
Pickleball.

Acting Director Jason Hicks commented that it is something we could look at.

MOTION BY COMMISSIONER STENGLEIN, TO AMEND HIS ORIGINAL MOTION,
SECONDED BY COMMISSIONER QUADE, TO DIRECT STAFF TO LOOK AT
OTHER LOCATIONS FOR PICKELBALL, INCLUDING NOISE ABATEMENT AND
BUDGETARY ISSUES. MOTION CARRIED.

David Hauswirth, 11 – 19th Ave. SW. One thing you may want to consider since noise
seems to be the big issue, there is such things as sound barrier curtains that can be put
up on the fencing that will really reduce the sound potential. He has played in quite a
few different places and they use that kind of netting and it does help. It is used in very
populated areas. There is not a problem with complaints when these curtains are used.

Assistant Director Jason Hicks stated they will look at all noise abatement products.

Michelle Veillette, 2908 Brookshire Lane expressed concern that if
Pickleball were put up there, she would also have concern for the small
children that ride their bikes to the park. With increased pickleball traffic
