October 10, 2017 Page 4 of 6 <br />3) Creating a contact list that would be inclusive of all community organizations <br />(business, geographic, cultural, schools, etc.) that could be used by a liaison for <br />notifying them of important updates about the community and in turn create a conduit <br />of communication or input back to the City on important matters affecting different <br />groups in New Brighton. <br /> <br />4) The City of New Brighton should strive to create a workforce, including elected and <br />appointed officials and volunteer resources that contain a broad range of diversity <br />including race, gender, language, life experience, and cultural background to improve <br />understanding and effectiveness in dealing with all communities. <br /> <br />5) Assist the City in identifying changes to the public spaces in NB that could be changed <br />to be more welcoming to different populations. What specifically could be done? <br />Create a budget and recommend as timeline for implementation. <br /> <br />6) Identify ways for the city to engage youth of color. <br /> <br />7) Consider whether a permanent City Commission should be cr eated to replace the Task <br />Force. <br /> <br />8) Report to Council no later than six months after the first Task Force meeting is <br />convened. Said report shall include a review of the content of meetings and <br />recommendations to the City Council regarding the directive s given by Council. <br /> <br />City Manager Lotter commented on the recent dialogues the City had with Oak Grove and <br />stated it is recommended the Council approve this resolution. Staff including, but not limited to <br />the City Manager, the Assistant City Manager, the Office Assistant and the Community <br />Engagement Officer will provide support to this Task Force. <br />Councilmember Bauman requested further information on directive No. 5. Mayor Johnson stated this <br />directive would allow the task force to consider ways to make City buildings more inviting. <br />Councilmember Bauman questioned if the Council would be hearing from the task force prior to the end of <br />six months. She believed it would greatly benefit the Council to receive updates. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen suggested the last statement in directive No. 5 be removed. He recommended the <br />Council be the body to create a budget based on the ideas created by the task force. <br />Councilmember Bauman agreed with this recommendation. <br />Councilmember Strub supported Councilmember Jacobsen’s recommendation as well. <br />Councilmember Burg stated she would be happy to support this amendment and noted this was not what the <br />group was supposed to be about. She wanted to see this group making recommendations and have dreams. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen questioned if directive No. 8 should include language to allow for an extension. <br />Mayor Johnson suggested the Council address this matter after six months. She believed this was a big step <br />for New Brighton and she looked forward to finding out what the City doesn’t already know. She wanted to <br />see the Council lead and better understand the community. <br />Councilmember Bauman questioned when residents would be submitting applications for this task force. <br />Mayor Johnson anticipated applications would be taken over the next two weeks. City Manager Lotter <br />explained he has spoken to several potential candidates and noted the Council could speak with these <br />individuals and any other applicants at the October 24th Council worksession meeting. <br />Councilmember Strub reported community engagement was a strategic priority for the City Council, along <br />with sense of place. He believed this task force would provide an important opportunity to take action and to <br />invite different communities a seat at the table. He encouraged the group to think big. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen encouraged those interested in serving on the task force to contact City Manager <br />Lotter at City Hall.
