11
On March 7 and 9, the police division conducted training for Emergency Medical
Responder as well as a tabletop exercise.

The springtime season is when the Community and Technical Colleges of the Minnesota
State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system host weekend continuing education
courses for firefighters at campuses across the state. Nine firefighters from New
Brighton attended training at South Central College in North Mankato. Classes attended
included: Arson Awareness, Why Fire Prevention Isn’t Working, Firefighter Cancer
Awareness, Developing and Delivering Presentations, Fire Instructor I Certification, and
Basic Fire Apparatus Pump.

The Fire Division completed its fourth and final week of four-hour refresher blocks of
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) training to renew their individual EMR licensure
with the State of Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board (EMSRB).
Allina Medical provided the instruction, including the final night exercise that involved
four scenario-based competency exercises: hazardous materials release, confined space
rescue, structural collapse response, and a structure fire search & rescue. Feedback from
firefighter participants was overwhelmingly positive and many comments were received
that this was the best format of EMS refresher training that many had received during
their public safety careers.
