12 <br />supplies, resulting in no cost to the City to offer a prescription drug take-back program. <br />Additionally, staff will be hosting a mobile drug take-back program that will occur at <br />several of the senior apartment buildings as well as locations where residents may not <br />have easy transportation options to drop off their unused prescription medication. Staff <br />will provide additional information on the mobile take-back program as the dates come <br />near. <br /> <br />On July 1st, members of the Fire Division visited various multi-family locations <br />throughout the city and conducted grease fire and kitchen safety demonstrations. These <br />demonstrations have proven their effectiveness in reducing kitchen fires within the City. <br />Firefighter Jeremy Berger led the instruction. <br /> <br />Public Safety recently received $18,760 from the Minnesota Board of Firefighter <br />Training and Education. Office Assistant Jody Boyd tracked the costs for training and <br />obtaining $7,800 in funding to offset costs for our firefighter training throughout the year. <br />The additional $10,960 was received by the department to cover all of our costs to <br />conduct our internal fire academy to train our new firefighters along with two <br />Firefighter/Police Officers from the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department. New <br />Brighton is one of the only fire departments in the State who were able to receive funding <br />to pay for an internal academy. <br /> <br />As part of its property/evidence room audit and purge, Public Safety has recently <br />disposed of a large quantity of recovered drugs, both the illegal variety and prescription <br />medications. Marijuana and other plant-based materials are accepted for disposal at a <br />power-generation facility in Alexandria where they are burned, while pharmaceuticals <br />and illicit drugs are brought to an industrial incinerator in the south metro area. For the <br />latter, a five-gallon bucket containing methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and any seized <br />prescription drugs was transported by two officers this week for proper disposal. <br /> <br />XI. RECOGNITION, NEWS AND INFORMATION <br /> <br />This section will include “good news” information about our public safety personnel. <br />This will include formal and informal recognition of the department and/or its personnel <br />on or off duty. <br /> <br />Working with IT, Public Safety has transitioned its patrol fleet of old-fashioned flip- <br />phones to modern smartphones that now allow officers to obtain digital photos and audio <br />interviews with the device and directly upload them to our police records management <br />system as evidentiary items. Previously, patrol officers had a field-kit containing a <br />separate digital audio recorder and camera, along with a separate cell phone, to gather all <br />of these pieces for their case files. <br /> <br />Thanks to the response and investigatory work of several New Brighton police officers, <br />Mohamed Adan was found guilty of burglary in Ramsey County District Court last week. <br />Adan was one of three suspects arrested last November 30th when they burglarized a <br />residence near the west entrance to Long Lake Regional Park and were interrupted by the <br />homeowners. While his two accomplices had already pled guilty, Adan chose a jury trial <br />for his charges of 1st Degree Burglary and Illegal Possession of a Firearm. Adan had a <br />stolen .22 rifle next to him in the stolen car that the trio had been driving; he was
