2

VI. Old Business
A. Dog Parks – Memo on Research
1. Dog Parks - Power Point
Assistant Director Hicks gave the dog park presentation.

Comments/Concerns:
Having enough space; ideally more than a football field and to be
fenced would be her priorities.
Water is not a necessity; people can bring their own water.
There has also been hook worm found at one of the dog parks.
Would the City have liability if that were to happen in New Brighton?
Commissioner inquired if Hidden Oaks would work. Assistant Director
Hicks commented that the soccer field is used quite a bit.
Would Hansen ballfield area #1 and #2 be good spot? Assistant
Director Jason Hicks said he thought it too close to homes.
Hansen hockey rink may be a possibility. A gate could be made to
keep the dogs in. possibly the boards that separated the two rinks
could be removed to make one larger area. Or keep them separate
and have one for small dogs. Locke Park in Fridley uses wood chips
almost over the entire area. Assuming that is to keep the
maintenance at a minimum. They do not have water available. It
would be nice, but not necessary. Hansen does have some
programs in the hockey rink areas, like soccer, for younger kids.
Inquiry of area by Exchange on the east side of Old Hwy 8. Assistant
Director Jason Hicks stated we would need to check with our
Community Assets Dept. Council Member Burg stated she did not
think it would work there because they are trying to sell that property
to high end users and a dog park would detract from the property.
Parks Superintendent Chris W olla, stated he heard that it is best to
have a large area that could be split and use one area one year and
then use the other area the next. This would help to reestablish the
turf damage that occurs.
Assistant Director Jason Hicks stated the Shoreview dog park had to
close the pond area of the dog park because there was so much
damage to the pond.
A Commissioner thought perhaps someone could approach Ramsey
County and we could do a dog park with them at Long Lake Park
perhaps by the proposed new parking lot for Lions Park.
It was mentioned that the City bought some land for storm water
mitigation; not for park purposes. No parking there. Not sure if it
could be a dog park.
High end developers are being sought for the property by the
Exchange on the east side. Adding a dog park there, would not
encourage buyers.
A Commissioner stated it would be helpful for City staff to give their
input and suggestions on what land may be available.
