4

ft away. She stated that she understands the commissioners are concerned
about the money issue, but the quality of life for those of us that live very close to
the court will be diminished. Hoping you don’t chose money over our quality of
life for the residents in that area.
A commissioner inquired if she would be opposed to a sound abatement curtain.
She said she would be concerned for her children’s safety. She also feels that
the sound of the pickleball will drive the tennis players away. For herself, it would
be hard to play tennis with pickleball being played on the court beside her. Felt
like Vermont may be a better location. Seems like the soccer field doesn’t get a
lot of use. The City has other options. It will ruin our existence. Is that what the
City wants to do?
Joanne Morse, 1405 29th Ave NW, Measured distances from the tennis court to
homes, church, etc. She provided that in written form. She has talked with tennis
players and they feel the courts should be for them. She stated she lives ½ block
away and she can hear the pickleball play inside her home. Another neighbor
has said the same thing. She does not mind it infrequently but leagues and 4
days per week for long periods of time is what she is concerned about.
Tom Johnson, 3115 Brookshire Court, inquired if this was all based on one
person.
Commissioner Justin stated no, there are groups interested and they are not all
residents. Our parks can all be used by non -residents; just as in other Cities have
their parks used by non-residents.
Resident Johnson stated many residents in the area do use the tennis court.
Wherever the court is installed he believes the Commission would be wise to
inquire of the residents in the area.
Commissioner Justin stated yes, that is our intent.

Commissioner Justin stated what he is hearing is that sound is a major issue.

A commissioner suggested we present to Council two options; one at a park that has a
an existing court and one at a location that does not. Council members can decide
which of the two options to choose.

Commissioner Justin stated perhaps we look at the site by the maintenance building
and the water tower site.

A commissioner felt we should be looking at this not only short term, but also will it fit
into the City’s comprehensive plan for the future.

A commissioner inquired if a fee could be charged for pickleball use as we do for some
other activities in the park to offset the cost of construction of the courts.

Acting Director Hicks stated we could charge for some designated use; i.e. when the
courts are used certain days for a couple hours at a time, but then we would not ch arge
during the remaining times because we would not have a way to collect it.

A commissioner inquired if we found money to do resurfacing of an existing court,
maybe we don’t have an option to build yet. If we can’t resurface a court, maybe we
need to table the discussion until the future when there may be an opportunity to have a
new pickleball court.
