2

John Lutterman Troop #93 with St. John the Baptist Church. The City
had a drainage ditch on the east side of Veterans Park. It was
overgrown with weeds and became an eyesore and softballs went into
the area that could not be retrieved. He worked with Mr. Wolla of the
City of New Brighton to replace the area with a rain garden and
improve the area. Planned for this project in September of 2016 and it
was completed June 16 of 2017. Cardboard was used to prevent the
weeds from growing but it would then dissolve over time. Mr Wolla
helped coordinate the delivery of 147 perennials which his volunteers
would plant. Logs, rocks and other debris were dug out of the ground.
Mulch was placed around the plants. Money was raised from St.
John’s to help cover the cost of the plants. Several organiza tions in
New Brighton helped donate funds. He heard from several people on
the improvement. Pat Tuma stated her softball players were happy
about the improvement so they did not lose any more softballs in the
weeds. He plans to continue to work with the City on this project to see
if there is anything else he can do. As the plants grow and spread out,
the area continues to improve. He thanked everyone for the time and
support for his project. He learned that there is a lot of communication
that needed to take place during every aspect of the project. There
was about 100 feet of mulch needed for the area. Parks
Superintendent Chris Wolla wanted to thank John because it was an
experimental project for the City using the cardboard. It has worked
well.
Josiah W eber, Troop 9871 in Mounds View. He stated his project was
a Gaga ball pit at Freedom Park. He thanked Mr. Wolla and everyone
who helped to make the project a success. He thanked Mr. Wolla for
help with the communication. He also thanked Mr. Prasek for h is help.
He was essential to the project’s success. It was a blessing working
with New Brighton. After Scout Camp he had the idea of doing a Gaga
Ball Pit for his project. After contacting several communities that did
not know what it was, he contacted Mr. Wolla who stated they were
going to install two of them. It was amazing how God’s providence put
it together like that. He oversaw the design and installation of the Gaga
Ball Bit. Gaga ball is like dodge ball. You hit the ball underhand and try
to hit someone and if it touches you, you are out. It is a great sport and
a great way to exercise. The plan was to build it at Freedom Park.
There were drainage issues there and he decided not to do the Eagle
Scout project at Freedom, but rather make it a service project that was
a moveable design and placed on a hard top area. Adults from the
troop helped with the design. The second part of the project was
construction day. He worked with Mr. Wolla and others to get materials
to the site and then he oversaw the construction of the project. It was
a major privilege doing his project with Mr. Wolla. The second Gaga
Ball Pit was built at Hansen Park for the Eagle Scout Project.
Commissioner Johnson stated he has seen kids playing and they
seem to enjoy it very much. Communication is the biggest thing he
learned during this project. Also he had to make sure he stayed in his
role as project leader and manager. At one time he had to suggest to
adults that things be done a different way.
