Deputy Director of Public Safety Hamdorf <br />reported this was the case. <br />Councilmember Burg thanked Deputy Director of Public Safety Hamdorf for his thorough report and for <br />addressing the safety of the community. <br />5 Ayes, 0 Nays -Motion Carried <br />2. Removal of Ben Jones from the Planning Commission. <br />Motion by Councilmember Burg, seconded by Councilmember Dunsworth to discuss the removal of <br />Ben Jones from the Planning Commission. <br />Councilmember Burg explained she has served on the Council for a number of years and noted <br />Commissioners serve at the will of the Council. She indicated the City has had wonderful Commissioners <br />and noted there is an cx ix ctatiotr of behavior for these individuals. She commented on a letter sent to the <br />editor by Planning Commissioner Ben Jones that disparages the work of the City Council. She expressed <br />concern with Mr. Jones' ability to continue to serve as a Commissioner given the fact he has vocalized his <br />opinion against the City Council. <br />Councilmember Allen stated he was new to the City Council but understood the long-standing policy the <br />Council had in place for Commission members. He believed that because this issue was not under the <br />purview of the Planning Commission, this instance was different and Mr. Jones should therefore not be <br />removed. He stated he would be voting against the motion on the floor. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen umler stood Commissioners were to serve at the will of the City Council. While he <br />did not condone the tone expressed by Commissioner Jones, he did not believe he had to be removed <br />Mayor Johnson commented Commissioner Jones came before the Council at one point and expressed his <br />views. She reported overly vocal Commissioners have been removed from their positions in the past She <br />explained that Commissioners were always Commissioners and could not select when they were or were not <br />viewed as such. She stated Commissioners acting against the City Council were not viewed as a valued <br />member of their respective Commission and should therefore be removed from their seat. She supported Mr. <br />Jones continuing to voice his opinion, but in doing so, would have to be let go from the Planning <br />Commission. <br />Councilmember Dunsworth discussed the precedent that had been set by previous Council action. She <br />supported the Council taking action to remove Mr. Jones from the Planning Commission. <br />4 Ayes,1 Nay (Jacobsen opposed} -Motion Carried <br />Motion by Mayor Johnson, seconded by Councilmember Burg to direct staff to draft a Resolution <br />recommending the removal of Ben Jones from the Planning Commission. <br />3 Ayes, 2 Nayes (Allen and Jacobsen opposed}Motion Carried <br />Commission Liaison Re arts Announcements and l.f dates <br />Dean Lotter <br />City Manager Lotter summarized the discussion that was held at the recent Council/Staff <br />Retreat. He explained he would address volunteerism and the great work being conducted by <br />VIPS in the City's next newsletter. <br />Graeme Allen <br />Councilmember Allen stated he was looking forward to serving as the Council liaison for the <br />EDC <br />2.
