I:\Commissions - NEW FOLDER\PREC (Parks Recreation and Environmental Commission)\2018\Working Documents\04.04.18\Selection of Chair and Vice Chair.docx

Memo

To: Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission Members
From: Jennifer Fink, Director of Parks and Recreation
Subject: Nomination of Chari and Vice Chair
Date: March 28, 2017

City Code Section 2-64 states that “Each commission shall annually recommend a
chairperson to the Council for formal approval. The Council may appoint any member.
The City Council shall annual confirm a chairperson to represent each commission or
committee. The chairperson will be expected to provide leadership for the commission
and to facilitate the conduct of regular meetings”.

Item 2 of this section lists the following criteria to be used when selecting the
chairperson:
A. The member has a served a minimum of one term (of three years) on the
commission.
B. The member has a good attendance record and expects to be able to make all
meetings while serving as chairperson.
C. The member has demonstrated leadership and involvement in past activities of the
commission.
D. The member has demonstrated the ability to understand and further the City’s
overall mission, specifically relating to the commission’s responsibilities.

As such, the Commission shall select a chair to serve for the upcoming year. There is no
requirement the chairperson change each year, so the existing chair may continue if
they are willing and that is the desire of the Commission. Staff suggests a member of
the Commission nominate another member. This nomination should be seconded and
voted on. While not a requirement of City Code, staff also recommends a vice-chair be
nominated. This nomination should also be seconded and voted on. Staff will forward
the chair and vice-chair recommendations to the City Council at their next meeting.
