..

VI. New Business

A. Winter Adventure Camp Presentation - Andy Soltvedt, Recreation
Supervisor

Andy stated that last year he was informed of a grant that was available for
communities to develop a new program. Six metro communities applied for the
grant and because they were all good programs, each community received $1,800
for supplies toward their program. The communities that received the grant then
made a presentation of their program at the Minnesota Recreation and Parks
Association conference.

.

Andy stated New Brighton's Winter Adventure Camp program is a 1 week Camp
intended for children that don't have day care during winter break. Children will
explore new outdoor activities and will be supervised with Park and Recreation staff
at Hansen Park. The neighborhood center, rink and surrounding outside area will be
used from Dec. 26-30. The program will include fieldtrips to 3 Rivers Park District
for x-country skiing, snow tubing and a visit to a nature center. Down hill skiing,
hayride and ice fishing are also planned. There will be projects and crafts that the
children can bring home each day which include ice candles, photography,
snowflakes and more. Demonstrations and speakers will also be used. We hope to
bring in sled dogs and do some orienteering in the park. We would like to see each
child experience one new winter activity and encourage participants to gain
knowledge. Cost is $4.00/hr which includes a long sleeved t-shirt. Information about
this program is in our Winter/Spring Recreation brochure. Information will also be
going out to the schools, in the Bulletin and direct mailing may be used. A
presentation at the schools may also be done to promote the program. We .
anticipate receiving about 20-50 participants. Cost is $140 for 5 days.

B. Hansen Park Disc Golf Course

Jane Braun asked those in attendance who wanted to speak to come to the podium,
state their name and where they live.

Steve stated that Parks and Recreation staff has had dialog with disc gOlfers and
with residents (primarily those on 1ih and 14th Avenues) regarding the increased
use of the disc golf course. Parking, littering, and some behavior issues have come
up. We want to address this and have a discussion tonight which may lead to some
solutions. The parking is a key issue that we would like to resolve by next sprin~.
There have been as many as 22-24 cars parked in the cul-de-sac and along 12
Ave at one time. One option that was looked at was to add a 24 stall parking lot.
The cost to do this would be approximately $50,000. No money is allocated for this.
Park dedication money may need to be used if this was decided to be the best
solution.

Some of the ideas to resolve the issue are listed below:
. Post signs requiring golfers to park in parking lot on east side of the park and
walk.
. Ask disc golfers to carpool .

2
