April 28, 2020 Page 6 of 8 <br />Councilmember Jacobsen agreed stating the Council had strong candidates to interview. He <br />thanked each of the residents who had stepped forward expressing an interest to serve the City. <br />He stated he was amazed by the talent the Council had choose from. <br />Councilmember Allen thanked everyone who applied for this vacancy and for being willing to <br />serve the community. He explained the quality of the City’s output was a direct reflection of <br />those willing to put in the work. He encouraged the residents that were not selected to get <br />involved and stay involved in order for the community to be reflective of the needs of its <br />citizens. <br />Mayor Johnson thanked all of the residents who applied for this position. She encouraged those <br />who had not been selected to get involved in the community. <br /> <br />A roll call vote was taken. 4 Ayes, 0 Nays, 1 Abstain (Councilmember Burg)-Motion Carried <br /> <br />Commission Liaison Reports, Announcements and Updates <br /> <br />Devin Massopust <br />City Manager Massopust reported the license bureau would be opening on May 4th. He <br />explained services would look differently. He noted the passport office would be open by <br />appointment only and these appointments would have to be set up online. He reported if <br />residents have questions regarding City services they should visit the City’s website or call <br />City Hall. He stated the Community Center would remain closed through June 1st. He <br />indicated the City was still providing all essential services, police and fire were responding to <br />calls. In closing, he wished Councilmember Burg all the best and thanked her for her <br />dedicated service to the City of New Brighton. <br /> <br />Mayor Johnson <br />Mayor Johnson reported this past weekend there was a drive over at the Public Safety <br />Department for fabric masks. She thanked all who participated in this event. She commented <br />on a meeting she attended virtually with area Mayor’s where financial impacts due to COVID- <br />19 was discussed. She explained local fraternal organizations and other non-profits have <br />formed a coalition to assist with COVID-19 efforts. She indicated the goal of this organization <br />was to raise $150,000. She stated the New Brighton Community Action Group has made over <br />4,000 calls to check in on New Brighton residents. She described how the Public Safety <br />Department has been working to stay safe and healthy. She noted there were four nursing <br />homes in the community that have COVID-19 amongst their residents and safe. She <br />commented it was a lonely time for these residents. She encouraged residents to consider <br />sending a greeting card or message to a resident at a local nursing home. <br /> <br />Emily Dunsworth <br />Councilmember Dunsworth thanked everyone who interviewed for the Council vacancy. She <br />noted PREC did not meet in April. She stated she appreciated the tremendous efforts of staff <br />to keep the City up and running, while also showing a great deal of care for New Brighton’s <br />residents. <br /> <br />Paul Jacobsen <br />Councilmember Jacobsen thanked the Planning Commission for meeting virtually with a <br />Public Hearing in April. He stated he was very proud of how well this meeting went. He <br />commented further on the items discussed by the Planning Commission, which included a <br />Solar Ordinance. He discussed the calls that were being made to New Brighton households <br />and explained if residents were in need of assistance he encouraged them to reach out. He <br />stated he would miss Councilmember Burg and thanked her for laying such a strong foundation <br />for the City of New Brighton.
