8

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office hosted the TZD Hi-Viz DWI Saturation on
Saturday, March 2, 2019 from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Five over-time funded officers produced
the following:

• 55 traffic stops
• 3 people taken to jail
• 2 DWI arrests
• 7 drivers cited for DAR/DAS
• 2 vehicles towed

The cold returned, but we still managed to have a couple of notables from this event:
• A St. Paul Officer stopped a vehicle for several traffic offenses. After backup arrived the
SPPD officer ran the driver through SFSTs (while the passenger waited with the backup
officer). The driver was arrested for 4th degree DWI (0.12 BrAC) and placed in the
squad. The passenger was arrested after he was found to be in possession of a loaded
handgun (without a permit) and drugs.
• An RCECC Public Safety Dispatcher and 911 Telecommunicator earned their place in
this summary when they helped to quickly terminate a pursuit in White Bear Lake. This
was accomplished by answering a 911 call (from the suspect vehicle), quickly realizing
the connection between the call and the pursuit, and convincing the driver that the car
following them (with lights and siren activated) was a “real squad” with a “real officer.”
The driver later told the deputy that they were scared to stop because of “posts” about
“sex traffickers impersonating police officers.” The deputy discussed several other
options (for any future encounters with law enforcement) with the young driver.

Twelve over-time funded and four volunteer reserve officers produced the following:

• 178 traffic stops
• 13 people taken to jail
• 6 DWI arrests
• 18 drivers cited for DAR/DAS/DAC
• 6 vehicles towed

Downtown (especially 7th Street) was a sea of green as the Irish, and “Irish wannabes,”
showed up to celebrate LuckyPalooza. The day started out slow as Officers stopped
vehicles for conduct usually associated with an impaired driver (Illegal turns and U-turns,
driving outside of the lane, wrong way drivers, and distracted driving) only to discover
that the people behind the wheel were sober…and working for a popular ride share
service. Despite this unusual twist, we had the following notables:
• Five Saint Paul Officers ended the evening with 1 DWI each. At least two of which were
2nd Degree arrests.
• A Mounds View Officer finished the evening with 3 warrant arrests (2 of which were
GM DWI warrants) a late DWI arrest.
• A St. Anthony Officer made 3 warrant arrests (one with a new charge of “possession of
stolen property”). The warrant / stolen property charges were discovered when the driver
caused a rollover crash on University in front of the Officer (and his fully marked squad
car).
