16
On Thursday, April 11, Deputy Director Hamdorf was invited to attend a meeting at the
School District offices to discuss building design and safety considerations with the
architects for the levy-funded school improvement and construction projects.

Thanks to the creative graphic design talents of Deputy City Clerk Sandra Daniloff,
Public Safety is actively recruiting for its currently vacant 30th police officer position
with a flyer that is available on the City’s website. In addition to traditional job posting
sites, Public Safety is also targeting several community/technical college job fairs, other
Professional Peace Officer Education (PPOE) programs, and peace officer associations
(Asian, Black, and Latino groups) with the information.

Director Paetznick and Deputy Directors Olson & Hamdorf met with a Standards
Coordinator on Tuesday, April 23, for an audit of the agency’s compliance with
Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training rules. This included a review
of training records documenting mandated continuing education (use of force, firearms,
and pursuit/emergency vehicle operations); the pre-employment files for our two most
recent police officer hires to assure compliance with medical examination, psychological
evaluation, and background investigation requirements for candidates; and the existence
of state-mandated policies for the department. The department was notified later in the
month that we successfully passed the compliance check.

Public Safety held its bi-annual meeting for all police and fire supervisors, bringing
together the 16 members of its combined Leadership Team on Monday afternoon, April
22. Given the 24/7 nature of police work and the fact that some fire supervisors have
full-time jobs outside of the City of New Brighton, the group took advantage of this
infrequent gathering opportunity for a review of department strategies and leadership
development.

XI. RECOGNITION, NEWS AND INFORMATION

This section will include “good news” information about our public safety personnel.
This will include formal and informal recognition of the department and/or its personnel
on or off duty.

At the April 9 city council meeting, Officers Amberg and Wodnick, Public Safety
Officers Thomas and Valdez, along with Allina Paramedics and a civilian were the
recipients of the Life Saving Award for their lifesaving efforts on January 23 where the
victim was not breathing and did not have a pulse. The victim recovered and was able to
return home. (See photo on 1st page of monthly report)

Public Safety Community Chaplain Father Paul Shovelain finished first in the 12th
Annual Scoops for Troops 5K run with a time of 20:07 on Sunday, April 28, at the Arden
Hills Army Training site while wearing the NBDPS running team colors.
