3
On Tuesday, April 9 at about 1:30 pm, Public Safety responded to a kitchen fire at the
County Road D apartments. Saint Anthony Fire Department was also dispatched
automatically to the incident per the closest-unit agreement. Deputy Fire Chief Mike
Schute arrived within a minute and reported heavy smoke in the third floor hallway.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames which were confined to the unit of origin.
The structure was ventilated and tenants were allowed to return to the building within
about an hour. A maintenance person from the property was evaluated by Allina
paramedics at the scene for smoke inhalation but was not transported. He had tried to
douse the flames with a portable extinguisher. The elderly resident and her grandchild
were able to safely evacuate. The cause was an unintentional cooking fire on the
stovetop that extended to the cupboards and wall.

Officers responded to the Hillside East Apartments around 4:30 pm on Tuesday, April 9,
and found an intoxicated male located in the grass/parking lot. He admitted to being
intoxicated and provided a preliminary breath test measuring .36. The male requested to
be transported to detox, however he was on their do not admit list. Instead, he was
transported to a local hospital by ambulance.

Police officers are continuing to respond to a high-volume of 911 hang-up calls from
traditional “landline” numbers in the south part of the city, which are still believed to be
attributed to the CenturyLink work along County Road E. Officer Tom Griffin followed-
up with an employee at the site to discuss the ongoing issue.

Thanks to the winter storm on April 11th, Public Safety responded to reports of power
lines down, including a large tree that fell onto power lines and then on to Long Lake
Road causing the road to be shut down between Mounds Ave and Rice Creek Road.

On April 11, the New Brighton Community Center (NBCC) reported that there were
three unattended children from two different families left at the Community Center. Two
of the kids were picked up by their grandmother. One seven year old girl was left by her
father several hours ago even after NBCC employees told him that he couldn't leave her
alone. They were unable to reach him and her mom was not at home. The seven year old
was transported to St Paul Children's Hospital and turned over to Ramsey Co Child
protection for physical and foster home placement. The father showed up at 1730 hours
upset and did not think what he did was wrong. Child protection was notified.
