4
Around 8:15 am on Saturday, May 18, a resident of 16th Avenue SW was making
breakfast for his family and heard the garage door go up. He went to investigate and saw
a male leaving under a half-open garage door carrying one of his children’s baseball bats.
The homeowner grabbed a bat and chased the suspects who were in a gray Honda Civic
with stolen plates (out of Maplewood). The homeowner broke the windshield and the
driver side headlight lens with the bat as the three males fled. Around 3:15 am Monday
morning, May 20, Maplewood Police reported that they had located the vehicle and had
arrested two suspects for charges unrelated to the New Brighton incident.

Public Safety responded to 10th Street NW just east of the Community Center on
Sunday, May 19, around 3:15 pm on a tree branch sparking on a power line. The
roadway was temporarily closed while the arcing continued until the wire eventually
broke and fell to the ground along with the tree. Xcel Energy responded to repair the
line. Power was out to the neighborhood including several traffic lights for a short time.

A 14-year old and a parent came to the Public Safety Center on Sunday, May 19, to
report an armed robbery that occurred at gunpoint the previous evening near Irondale
High School. Investigation determined that the incident occurred in Mounds View and
their officers handled the case.

Shortly after midnight on Thursday, May 23, officers responded to the 600 block of 19th
Avenue NW on report of a vehicle rollover in the middle of the street after it had struck a
parked car. The occupants fled from the scene but the passenger was located nearby and
eventually identified the driver of the vehicle who was also found by officers and arrested
for Criminal Vehicular Operation and 3rd Degree DWI due to his level of intoxication
and injuries suffered by the passenger. A search warrant was obtained and an evidentiary
blood sample was taken from the suspect.

New Brighton officers assisted with establishing a perimeter west of the Mermaid on
Friday, May 24, when three occupants fled from a stolen vehicle after Mounds View
officers had been in a pursuit with the vehicle. Two suspects were eventually taken into
custody.

Shortly before 1:30 am on Saturday, May 25, New Brighton officers assisted Roseville
Police with a high-risk traffic stop of a reported stolen vehicle on I-35W just north of
County Road D. The three occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody without
incident.

New Brighton officers assisted Minnesota State Troopers with an injury crash involving a
vehicle versus deer on I-35W at County Road D around 8:30 am on Saturday, May 25.
Several passersby reported the vehicle occupant was lying on the ground and in need of
medical attention.

On Sunday, May 26 around 2:15 pm, police officers and firefighters responded to the
Dollar Tree on report of a vehicle that had been driven through the front windows of the
building. The 90-year old driver stated that he stepped on the gas pedal instead of the
brake. Nobody was injured. The window frame was bent and the glass shattered but the
vehicle did not enter the store.
