On May 301h at about 4:00 am Officer Amberg was on 1694 observing eastbound traffic
when he observed a 2009 Lexus traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed. Radar indicated
speeds of 83 mph in the 60 mph zone. Officer Amberg stopped the vehicle on eastbound 694
at 35W and identified the driver as Dennies Vang, 32 years of age, from Roseville. Mr.
Vang admitted to traveling in excess of 70 mph and also smelled strongly of alcoholic
beverages. He stated that he had consumed "2 shots within 5 minutes, ah minutes, um hours
I mean". His eyes were extremely bloodshot and watery. Mr. Vang failed field sobriety
tests and was arrested. A breath test revealed an alcohol content of .20. Due to the high test,
Mr. Vang was booked on the enhanced charges of DUI in the 3rd degree, a gross
misdemeanor. Officers arrived and found
that a vehicle, a 2008 Buick Enclave, was in the intersection of the roadway. A second
vehicle was located under a tree about 200 feet from the intersection on the south side of
10th St NW. That second vehicle, a 2010 Dodge Charger, was occupied by a male, later
identified as Bryan Denardo, 24 years of age from New Brighton. Mr. Denardo had
blood on his face and appeared to be significantly injured. Officers were unable to gain
entry to the front of the vehicle and the Fire Division responded for an extrication.
Officer Scott Kingslien was able to enter the rear of the vehicle through a missing back
door and attempted to provide emergency care. Mr. Denardo was eventually removed
from the vehicle and transported to HCMC where it was determined that he had
significant injuries including reportedly a ruptured spleen, broken ribs and a torn or
ruptured aorta but would survive. Investigation revealed that Mr. Denardo had driven
through a red light eastbound on 10th St NW striking the Buick, then hit a road sign and
then struck a tree with enough force for it to fall onto Mr. Denardo's vehicle. The MN
State Patrol responded to conduct a crash reconstruction. Alcohol may have been a
factor in this crash. The investigation is ongoing.
