New Brighton Climate Action Plan 4 -5 <br />CAP ACTIONS Strategy Action Waste Management <br />WM 3: Increase recycling from 31% to 41% of total MSW handled by 2030. <br />WM 3- 1 Enforce the commercial recycling ordinance and undertake an educational campaign to expand recy- <br />cling options in multi-family housing. <br />WM 3- 2 Expand recycling for business and public facilities. <br />WM 3- 3 Require city-hosted events comply with a Zero Wastes Packaging policy and relevant environmental <br />purchasing policies; expand to require that outside users of certain city facilities also use composta- <br />ble, reusable, or recyclable food service items. <br />WM 3- 4 Adopt a “to go” packaging ordinance requiring containers to be recyclable or compostable. <br />WM 3- 5 Support state legislation to prohibit Styrofoam ; incentivize restaurants to choose alternatives ; edu- <br />cation campaigns on single use items and consumer choice. <br />WM 3- 6 Ensure that recycling in schools, City buildings, public housing, and public spaces is fully implement- <br />ed. Conduct a study to determine which facilities do not currently have recycling or could have recy- <br />cling diversion signiflcantly improved. Coordinate with those facilities to improve recycling partici- <br />pation. <br />WM 3- 7 Conduct outreach to determine what assistance may be needed to increase recycling, organics col- <br />lection, and composting. <br />WM 3- 8 Establish a policy or ordinance expanding or requiring textile reuse and recycling based on outcomes <br />of the Clothing Reuse and Recycling pilot project. <br />WM 3- 9 Engineering staff to adjust material speciflcations to require recycle withiin mix-designs for street <br />projects. <br />WM 3- 10 Continue to support collaborative consumption community projects, such as neighborhood compost <br />projects, tool libraries, and repair cafes through mini-grant programs. <br />WM 3- 11 Add a plastic bag recycling collection at City's farmer's market. <br />WM 3- 12 Work with haulers to expand recyclable materials accepted such as shredded paper and aluminum <br />foil. <br />WM 3- 13 Partner with service providers who specialize in specialty and expanded recycling programs, like Rid- <br />well, to establish expanded recycling collection service options.
