<br />Page 7 - January 22, 2002, New Brighton Council Minutes <br /> <br />Larson noted concem for thc pI'Qject's impaL't to parking near and around Champps, and questioned whether <br />competition from area hotels would create vacancies at the proposed hotel. He suggested that round the clock an- <br />I security at both the apartments and hotel. <br /> <br />Hoffinan is pleased to hear that the senior housing will be owner-occupied. <br /> <br />Sweeley verified that the hotel's lower level will not contain retail, but asked if the office building cou ld accommodate <br />retail space. Black acknowledged that although New Brighton is a good retail market, this site does have some <br />accessibility issues and lack of a retail anchor or grocery ~iore. <br /> <br />Don Roberts, 1213 Highview Dr., is against the idea of a hotel and reminded the Council of their accountability to the <br />residents who have spoken in majority in opposition to the hotel component. <br /> <br />Ron Ronello, 1779 Valerie Ln.., noted this parcel is a valuablc asset to the community, and does not feel the proposal <br />provides for the commun ity' s needs. He feels a family restaurant would be a wonderful addition to this site, and <br />thanked the Ta<;k Force for all their work.. <br /> <br />Evelyn Jain, 1428 Long Lake Rd., noted concetll of satumting this area with another hotel, and questioned the concept <br />of an adjoining senior complex and hotel.. <br /> <br />Tish Woods, 1361 Pike Lake Dr., feels the Sinclair is a valuable asset to the community, and asked if the owners will <br />be provided relocation assistance. Fulton said State law requires some fonn of relocation assistance, and <br />acknowledged that the removal of the station is one ofthe most difficult components of the proposal. <br /> <br />Lois Zweig, 1061 Robin Ln., feels the area needs more retail, but not a hotel. <br /> <br />I Lori Wolfe, 2230 Bent Tree Hills Dr., said the City needs to send a message to KA that the community does not <br />support this proposal and this site is not zoned for a hotel.. <br /> <br />Chris ScobaIl, 1143 Robin Ln., is very surprised that KA has not provided a second proposal for the City to consider. <br />The residents are unanimously against the proposal, and noted great concern of safety and risk fac.lors associated with <br />a hotel.. He would prefer that the Sinclair remain at the site. <br /> <br />Steve Minar, 1100 Silver Lake Road and Minar Ford, supports the hotel and restaurant concept because it would <br />provide a good balance and asset to the community. <br /> <br />Mike Strong, 2680 Innsbruck Q., questioned the profitability and viability of the hotel in the long mn, and :feels it <br />would be detrimental to the community. <br /> <br />Larson reiterated his decision tonight is not based in any way in relation to re-election concems. <br /> <br />Bernie Debar, 2101 13 ~l St., said many Medtronic visitors stay at hotels closer to downtown and noted the <br />deteriorating condition of a hotel in Columbia Heights. <br /> <br />Ramona Hohnes, 3 7041nnsbruck Dr., is very anxious to see additional retail and the hotel developcd at this site, and <br />feels the hotel customers would use area retail businesses. <br /> <br />Elaine Cole, 77 321Jd Ave. NW, acknowledged this is an emotional issue, but believes this valuable parcel should be <br />I developed and supports the hotel.. <br /> <br />Nancy Grant, Task Force Member and 1100 Robin Ct:., believes this an issue of values and positive contributions to <br />.. the community which the KA proposal cannot provide. She feels the consultants have misused facts when providing <br />infunnation to the Task Force.
