'"

...

-2-

..

.

Another part of our plan would be to improve our
entrance with a conc:t~teJ'slab with cUrbs attached. Drainage
and a treated-timber retaining wall would be provided to prevent
sand from covering the slab and the street. This treated timber
retaining wall is made up of our own product and is used through-
out the cities by landscape architects as the stronger and more
appealing wall, so you see again, this indicates the direction
that we are taking in improving our image.

What about our office? Councilman Werdouschegg had
an excellent suggestion of, rather than moving our office onto
5th Avenue, that it would serve the same purpose to move it
to 1st Street. However, although this idea is excellent and so
is the general council's idea to move our office onto the street,
we run into a major snag. Unlike our neighbor, "Bell Lumber
and Pole", our head office is in Milwaukee and at this time it is
impossible to for see when it would be moved up here or even
if it ever will be. Who knows?

So the question becomes one of whether or not it is
justifiable cost-wise. and operationally-wise to move our present
"working office" to another location. Due to the fact that we
have our production.plants, our equipment. shop, our lunch room,
our laboratory and our boiler house all in one centrally located
location, it appears, from our standpoint, that to move our office
would constitute quite a headache, operationallyunfeasable and
overly costly. In this day and age of high costs, lower
productivity, foreign competition, what have you, it becomes
harder and harder to justify another added cost especially as
our main bread winner "poles" has been a poor market for the
last two years.

We hope that you can understand a willihgn~ss on our
part to stand behind your position of improving our mutual image,
yet not become too overly disappointed by our inability to
completely conform to your proposals. However', we would like to
assure you that if and when the, situation arose whereby we could
move the office, that we would and that the situation could change
in ten years time.

Please note our willingness to reach an understanding
with you in regards to this situation and also the direction that
we as a company are striving towards. Whenever and wherever we
make an improvement we want to do so in a manner that improves our
image. We hope that you understand that we are certainly trying
and in time we hope that you will appreciate our efforts, as well
as us appreciating yours, in trying to improve the City of
New Brighton.

The MacGillis & Gibbs Co.

Mr. Robert Norgard~. \ vd

Ie :~~t.'.>,'
~~:ei;:~~=;::t ~! .7 · · ..

Mr. Harold I.
