<br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Council Meeting Minutes <br />July 11, 1989 <br /> <br />Page 6 <br /> <br />Council Business, continued <br /> <br />Council Business <br /> <br />Community Center Task Force Co-Chairs Ken Johnson and Ed Walhof and <br />Donn Wiski, Resolution Inc., presented the Community Center Needs Community Center <br />Assessment Report. Task Force Report <br />Report 89-183 <br /> <br />Mr. Walhof explained that the question for the need of a community <br />center in New Brighton has been around for'many years. In March <br />1989, Council appointed a 23 member task force to review community <br />center needs and report thei r fi ndi ngs back to the Council. The <br />Task Force recommended, and the Council agreed, to retain Resolution <br />Inc. to assist in the research and evaluation of the needs <br />assessment. <br /> <br />The Task Force implemented these steps in the planning and <br />communication process: <br /> <br />Task Force minutes <br />Monthly newsletter <br />Updates in the New Brighton Bulletin <br />Organizational Survey <br />Open house interview/discussion sessions <br />Community Center hot line <br />City newsletter <br />Town Hall meeting <br />Metropolitan area community centers survey <br />Tours of other community center facilities <br />National Guard presentation at February Council meeting <br />Community forum <br />National Recreation Facilities Design and Management Seminar <br /> <br />Mr. Johnson explained that the Task Force has determined there is <br />a need for a community center in New Brighton. After reviewing the <br />results, the Task Force feels a combination senior/recreational <br />center would fit into the needs of the community. In addition, the <br />Armory proposal offers a unique opportunity for a shared-use <br />facility. <br /> <br />The Task Force feel s the next steps needed to faci 1 i tate the <br />Council's decision should include site assessments, a financial <br />feasibility study, and a work session with Task Force, Donn Wiski, <br />and Council. <br /> <br />Mr. Wiski feels the Task Force has done an outstanding job in <br />developing the needs assessment report. <br /> <br />Mr. Wiski explained that the Task Force determined needs from the <br />following perspectives: facility/program space availability, <br />current use surveys, market demand, and community policy. <br />
