1

I

1

Council Meeting Minutes
May 23, 1989

Page 7

Council Business, continued

Locke presented for consideration an ordinance to change the name
of 10th Street NW to Long Lake Road.

At the May 9, 1989, Council meeting, representatives of Opus
Corporation requested and the Council agreed to the proposed name
change of 10th Street NW to Long Lake Road. Continuing the name of
Long Lake Road south of I -694 as far as 8th Avenue NW woul d
accomplish the objective of giving Opus a Long Lake Road address.
It also would not affect any existing residents or businesses
because of the area being vacant.

Renami ng 10th Street NW further east to 5th Avenue or to I -35W,
would connect Long Lake Road to the Old Towne area and the Highway
8 Corridor. This would make the Long Lake RoadjI-694 interchange
clearly an entrance to Old Towne and the Corridor. The further east
the Long Lake Road name is extended, the more properties, businesses
and residents are affected.

Extending the Long Lake Road identification to 5th Avenue would
affect 8 single family homes, 6 apartment buildings with 102
dwelling units, the New Brighton Medical Clinic and New Brighton
Lumber. Extending it to I-35W would affect the Golden Pond project
and four more single family homes.

Sta ff is recommend i ng Counc il adopt the Ord i nance chang i ng 10th
Street's name to Long Lake Road up to 8th Avenue and take steps to
change the name further east to I-35W. The residents and property
owners should be notified of the Council IS intent to consider a name
change prior to Council action.

Benke noted that an action such as this can be very costly to
residents because of the changing of their addresses on checks,
credit cards, licenses, etc. Benke mentioned the possible renaming
of the Highway 8 corridor to either Long Lake Road or New Brighton
Boulevard. Benke feels a thorough investigation should be made to
determine the possible name change.

Will i ams woul d support a name change to I -35, but feels the New
Brighton Post Office should be notified and become involved in this
process. Benke noted the dual address labeling initiated by the
Post Office is extended for only a limited period of time.

Council Business

Renaming of Portion
of 10th Street to
Long Lake Road
Report 89-147
