The shade
tree varieties (Patmore ash, Greenspi re and American 1 i ndenand
Columnar and Norway Maple) would be 10-14 feet tall; the ornamental,
flowering crabapple variety Pink Spries would be 6-8 feet tall. The
Greenspire linden and Patmore ash were selected in over half of the
sites because of their durability and superior growth in city
condition. All trees would be delivered in a burlap bag and would
be planted by early summer. The cost of the tree planting is
budgeted for 1989 and would total $7,000, with an average tree cost
of $90.

Planting sites were determined with consideration given to
interfering utilities, buildings, signs, driv~ways and intersection
visibility.

The City is in the process of preparing a greenway plan for Old
Highway 8. If such a plan would be approved before planting, none
of the five trees proposed for the easement of Old Highway 8 would
be planted.

Williams expressed concern that the downtown area landscaping should
be consistent and asked the overall effect of the project. Wriskey
said the plan would present an attractive city entry by adding an
eye-pleasing effect to help hide the vacant lots.

Gunderman asked if future development wou 1 d cause damage to the
trees. Wriskey feels the trees would survive a relocation. Also,
these trees may be used in other future development plans. Wriskey
has found his recommendations are consistent with the plans of the
Opus Corporation site. Larson noted the possible redevelopment near
10th street may cause some trees to be relocated.

Gunderman is interested in researching the possibility of installing
new entry signs next to attractive landscaping.

Brandt feels the tree planting proposal would improve the area's
appearance and is an excellent idea.

Mot i on by Gunderman, seconded by Larson, to APPROVE THE TREE
PLANTING PLAN FOR THE DOWNTOWN AREA OF NEW ~RIGHTON.

5 Ayes - 0 ~ayes, Motion Carried

Council Business

Community Center Task
Force

Boulevard Tree Planting
Plans
Report 89-86
