I

I

I

Council Meeting Minutes
January 10. 1989

Page 3

Special Order of Business. continued

Motion by Benke. seconded by Williams. to APPROVE THE RESOLUTION
NAMING THE FIRST PLACE FINALISTS IN THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION'S
FIRST ANNUAL ESSAY CONTEST.

5 Ayes - 0 Nayes. Motion carried.

Larson said the tape titled "Remembering Martin" will be available
to all area schools for presentation to their students.

Williams commended the Human Rights Commission for their excellent
idea of sponsoring this essay contest.

Benke gave the following State of the City statement:

1989 STATE OF THE CITY

As I prepared my Fourth State of the City comments for
tonight. I was reminded of how easy it is to lose sight
of our bless i ngs as we focus energy on sol vi ng our
problems. Consequently. I can speak tonight with renewed
confi dence and enthus i asm. I do so because of a 11 the
proud and caring people who have helped make our City a
great place to be. I do so because we have the strength
and ability to help ourselves and others as we meet the
challenges of 1989 and the new decade of the 90ls just
ahead.

Our list of accomplishments for 1988 is incomplete but
a 1 ready along one. Many items on the 1 i st are not
visible to most residents. These bits of city business,
if not done and done well, can detract from our future
success. Simple things like repairing water wells
refurbishing facilities and modernizing computer systems
have been done efficiently by capable staff.

We have also made progress in visible tasks such as
rebuilding Veteranls Park and Freedom Park. Welve added
support for senior citizen programs and a license bureau.
We added a new fi re truck and other new tools and
techniques for getting things done.

Special Order of
Business

Martin Luther King Essa~
Contest
Report 89-4
Resolution 89-02

Mayor Benke's State of
the City Address

'4
