I

I

I

Council Meeting Minutes
January 10, 1989

Special Order of Business. continued

We were also able to restore our financial strength by
cashing the $9.2 million dollar check from the U.S. Army.
Finally, we can begin turning our energy from litigation
and confrontati on to restorati on and aquifer cl ean-up.
We are not through yet as we can anticipate a 20-30 year
program. But the worst is over.

Progress was made also in our redevelopment efforts. CMS.
Inc. celebrated their grand opening as the first new
building in Brighton Corporate Park. Beisswengers opened
their new store and already need more space. Brightondale
opened and Golden Pond broke ground to provide new housing
opportunities. The list goes on--Bramante1s By The Lake
is fully leased. Harstad Companies have begun building
new homes in the Innsbruck area. Seminary Estates has
only a few lots left. Numerous businesses have expanded
and homeowners conti nue to remodel and upgrade thei r
homes.

A 11 of these acti viti es refl ect a healthy and vi brant
attitude that is thriving in our community. Yes. we have
room for improvements; but. I believe the survey conducted
by Decision Resources in August accurately reported a key
advantage we enjoy in New Brighton. The survey shows that
many of us came because of conveni ence. But we stay
because of the people and community spirit that continues
to grow in the warm afterglow of our Centennial
Celebration.

Community Spirit! It is most evident in the hard work and
enj oyment we see at the Annual Fi sh i ng Contest. the
Stockyard Days events. the Antique Car Run and the Squash
Festival. The 1988 Squash Festival was the best that I
can remember. The 2nd Annual Antique Car Run was more fun
than the first--but not as good as the 3rd promises to be.
Our links to Brighton. England were reinforced by visits
from the Honorable Mayor of Brighton. Councillor Patricia
Hawkes. Reciprocal visits were made by the Sendens and
by Gary Hoonsbeen, our first representative in the London
to Brighton Run. Plans are being made now for a return
tour to Brighton in April_

Page 4

Special Order of Business

Mayor Benke's State of the
City Address

~
