I

I

I

Council Meeting Minutes
January 10, 1989

Page 5

Special Order of Business. continued

Along wi th success and growth came change. Three key
staff positions found new people. Gary Berger moved to
Arden Hills, Brenda Krueger moved to the private seotor
and Debbie Young moved to Anoka. While we regret losing
capable people. we are pleased that they achieved
promotions that reflect well on our City. Those
departures brought three new faces to thei r positi ons:
Ann Norris in Community Development. and Samanatha Orduno
and Pat L i ndqui st to the Manager I s Offi ce. We we 1 come
them to the City leadership team.

As we look to 1989. opportunities. challenges and changes
again await us. Perhaps the most bittersweet change is
the pending departure of City Manager Hank Sinda after 5
years of outstanding service. Hank has been a key factor
in our recent successes. His leadership, his judgement
and his professionalism have made my job as Mayor much
easier. We will miss his friendship and advice. It is
perhaps a measure of hi s success that we can say with
certainty that we can carryon while the replacement
search is completed. So it is with sadness and with pride
that we wish him and his family all the happiness possible
(even if we canlt totally understand what he hopes to find
it i n Iowa).

Perhaps the most exciti ng opportunity of 1989 wi 11 be
developing a consensus on a Civic Center. Discussions
begun in 1988 as to whether or not we shoul d bui 1 d a
community center. what might go into it. where should it
be and how woul d we pay for it need to be concl uded.
Later tonight we will discuss a letter received from the
Minnesota National Guard concerning development of an
Armory in New Brighton. If we agree, their facility can
accommodate our ideas and needs for a c i vi c center at
considerable mutual cost savings. We need to move quickly
on this opportunity.

We must also get serious about recycling and. perhaps.
organized garbage hauling. We1ve not taken an aggressive
stance but we must deal with rising costs and the
envi ronmenta 1 problems created by tons of trash bei ng
generated daily.

Special Order of Business

Mayor Benke's State of th
City Address

'~
