I

I

I

Council Meeting Minutes
January 10, 1989

Special Order of Business. continued

Continued work on abating the rendering plant stench also
ranks high on my priority list. It won't be easy but a
permanent solution is needed. We have joined forces with
Arden Hills to obtain relief from the aromas that create
livability problems and seriously hamper our redevelopment
efforts.

One of our more perplexing challenges will be our efforts
to improve communication with our residents. We have made
progress but communication remains a weak spot compared
to our other endeavors. We have added Judy Goepel to our
staff in an effort to reach out with news and information
peop 1 e want and need. But, our work won I t succeed if
people don't care enough to listen.

So I would challenge the Bulletin and Focus newspaper
staff to seek us out and to ask questi ons. I woul d
challenge our residents to learn more about the City and
why we do what we do.

Devel~pment also continues as a priority concern. Thanks
to the combi ned efforts of the Chamber. the Economi c
Development Commission and staff. major developers now
know who we are and where we are. We now need to match
our opportuniti es with the busi nesses 1 ooki ng for new
facilities as we deal with the realities of the metro
marketplace and world economics.

Nineteen eighty nine! The end of the 80's also marks the
start of a new decade that wi 11 concl ude a dramati c
century. Planning for our future remains an essential
task. The Council and staff will take time out this
coming weekend to review our priorities and the need for
changes. We wi 11 bui 1 d on past efforts and the 1 i st of
priorities generated at the Chamber's brainstorming
session in November. Broadening the base of participants
remains as an unfulfilled wish for this process. I hope
we can generate more ideas and questions from civic groups
and our advisory boards.

This list of opportunities is by no means complete.
Significant effort is needed just to maintain the high
standards we I ve estab 1 i shed. But. we have much to be
thankful for and many people to thank.

1io

Page 6

Special Order of Business

Mayor Benke's State of the
City Address
