VN-97 p-' Sambos
` '~:Feb...;13.
P, 2
;'
The New Brighton Zoning Code limits the size of advertising signs in
industrial districts to five square feet of surface for each lineal
foot of lot frontage. Due to;the irregular shape of this parcel, the
front lot-line: is. only 60.16 feet, which limits the size of_the sign
to a 300 square foot maximum: It-is the opnionof the petitioner that
a surtace area: of 348 ;square-feet is, necessary for adequate visablity
of the sign.
PLANNING COMMISSION CONSIDERATIONSs January. l6, 1973 -
Mr. Al Slarks appeared representing the petitioner.
Chairman Forme I read aloud the Planner''s,comments.
The Planner stated-that it appears the Zoning Code contains no, limita-
tions on the height of signs in industrial districts.: He also noted:;
that the. proposed ign is an expensive 'one and that should it have to
be amortized as a non-conforming sign because of a new sign-ordinance,
it would take about 6 years for such amortization. He further stated
that the total height of the proposed sign was 63 feet with the sign
area beginning 30 feet above the ground. He stated that it seemed to
him that-the intention was to have the. sign visible-from x-35W but that
this'seems impractical because a motorist would be-past the exit when
he saw the sign.
Mr. Slarks stated that the reason for the exact dimensions which were
proposed is that these are the standard .dimensions for a Sambo's
Restaurant sign.
Mrs. .Lenore Parham of the Street Graphics Subcommittee, Community
:.Betterment Task Force appeared before the Commission. She stated that
according to the new standards proposed in her comm~.ttee's report the
size of ground signs would be determined by width and speed limit;-
of the road toward which the sign was oriented. She stated that a
commercial building in this location-would be allowed a ground sign
with a maximum area of 230 square feet and maximum height of 32 feet.
She-also stated that there would be a limit of 10 bits of information
which could be communicated by each establishment and that the proposed
sign seems to have more than 10. She suggested that-since other companies
have different-size signs, Sambo•';s may have a smaller sign which they
could erect.
Mr, Slarks stated that he did not know if Sambo's had other size signs.
He said his company had been contracted simply to ere ct the sign.
PLANNING COMMISSION RECOMMENDATIONS: January 16, 1973.:
Motion by Mann, seconded by Partyka to recommend denial ov VN-97 .and to
suggest that the Council refer .the request to the Street Graphics
Subcommittee for con-ment and to furthex recommend-that a letter be sent
to the petitioner stating the exact size and design standards which
