I

I

I

Council Meeting Minutes
February 24, 1987

Berger reported two representatives from the State's Department
of Human Rights have been invited to attend New Brighton's next
Human Rights Commission meeting to answer questions regarding the
lack of cases originating with local Commissions. Berger further
indicated local commissions receive reports from the State regard-
ing types of cases from each local jurisdiction. Benke asked
Berger to pursue the matter and advise council if its assistance
was needed.

Brandt reported the Planning Commission adopted a resolution
suggesting unimproved real estate in the city quite possibly
ought to be re-evaluated in terms of its tax valuation.

Benke had no immediate problem with looking at the issue to see
if we do have a problem, and suggested Locke look at it before we
take any action.

Locke explained vacant land is valued less than if it were on
the market, but did not know if it is treated differently in New
Brighton than other areas in Ramsey County.

Benke suggested staff be asked to research the topic and consider
further action at a subsequent meeting.

Gunderman advised there are two guests coming for Thursday's pro-
gram at Pike Lake Elementary School (one from Michigan and one
from Chicago) and asked that an Honorary Ambassador certificates
be prepared for each; Benke stated the certificates would be made.

Schmidt reported the Cable Commission elected Ron Eggert from
Falcon Heights as Chairperson; and indicated Berger's letter to
the Commission summarizing some of the problems that occured with
the transfer in ownership will be presented to the Commission.

Williams reported the Park Board had another successful Christmas
party.

Benke announced he received an invitation to the League of Minn-
esota Cities' conference June 9-12, in Rochester; the conference
will be the kick-off for the League's 75th Anniversary year.

Benke read the letter the City received from President Reagan
regarding the City's Centennial.

Benke received notice from the National Arbor Day Foundation
that New Brighton had again been selected as a Tree City U.S.A.
Gunderman asked that letters of commendation be written to Rick
Wriskey~ New Brighton's Forester, and Anderson for their hard
work to make the award possible.

Page Eight

Unimproved
Real Estate

Honorary Ambassadors

Cable Commission
Update

Park Board

LMC's Conference

Centennial Letter
from President
Reagan

Tree City U.S.A.
