EXTRACT OF MINUTES
`~ NEW BRIGHTON PLANNING COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
DECEMBER 20, 1983
VN-228, KOREAN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Staff recommended denial of the variance request on the
grounds the applicant had not shown sufficient evidence
of unique circumstances or undue hardship.
Mr. Hak Soo Kim submitted a photograph of the church
that showed the cross attached to the building earlier
this year. Mr. Kim stated that because there are
windows all across the front of the building there is no
room to put the cross on the building facade.
Chairman Williams asked the applicant if he feels it is
necessary to pint the cross above the roof line for
people to see it.
Mr. Kim stated that that is the reasoning. He stated
people are usually looking at the skyline for a cross.
In addition the cross would help with the confusion that
the school is now a church.
Chairman Williams asked if the sign adjacent to the
front door was up yet.
Mr. Kim stated it was not.
Chairman Williams asked if the cross could be located
where it was shown in the submitted photograph.
Mr. Kim replied that in that location the cross could not
be attached securley to the building.
Chairman Williams asked if the applicant had considered
putting the cross and church name together in a sign to
be located near the street.
Mr. Kim stated it was the desire of the church not to
disturb the front yard and that this alternative had been
considered unsuitable.
Commissioner Dee Weaver stated she had examined most
churches in the community and they all seem to have a
sign and a cross.
Commissioner Livingston stated that the applicant's cross
was small in comparison to other churches.
Motion by Williams, seconded by Livingston to close the
public hearing.
5 Ayes - 0 Nayes, Motion Carried
8:00 P.M. -
8:10 P.M.
