October 7, 1981 Park Board Minutes
Page. 3
Grimshaw asked Schmidt if the Council was asking for a Park Board
recommendation.
Schmidt said. yes.
Dahl stated it is a magnificent opportunity..
Gunderrnan was. concerned with what. will happen in the future. He
agrees. there is a need, with both parents working in-many house-
holds. The fall out is obvious.. The second .point he wants to
reinforce is that the County programs that used to be provided .are
disappearing or have :been cut :back.. We will have to address many
of these types ofprograms or activities in the future. Is .this
an item that fits into our. program. in favor of approving this but
want a broader base. Want to look at it now_for what we want in the
future as the tax bite hits. We should develop a system.because these.
kinds of things will-come at us like snowballs in the future.
Olson said normally these are picked up by the School District but
it is'not'anymore.
Gunderman said there wasn`t any decision made by the School. District -
was a total void. Perhaps they should approach the superintendent in
April or May..
Anderson said by that time we will have a track record to go back to.
Anderson said we should take a look at the kinds of activities the
City will get hit with before we get hit.' We are .working at maximum
now. We are going to have to consider the possibility of decreasing..
Johnson asked if a private group could operate and still have the
School District license it.
Solberg said the cost is too great for a private group to sponsor.
Grimshaw asked for clarification on how the parents work with the
program.
Anderson said the parents will work on getting a grant but will not.
be directly involved in the administrative end_such as setting class
sizes, buyhg materials or making flyers. The problem with the
parents-working more administratively is that they, for one, are
the ones that don't have time - they need this kind of program,.
therefore they do 'not havetirne to spend on the work that is involved
in this program. We have alot of things `needed easily accessible
such as'mimeo machine, and' someone to answer phones all_day. Parents
group would have a very difficult time trying to operate this on
their own.
Johnson said_he wants to slice the program as a cooperative effort
and wants to see the parents continue to be involved.
