June 4, 1980 Park Board Minutes Page 6 Dahl stated we should be attuned-to people walking more and bicycling rather than driving. Perhaps a path. system and lighted walk ways would be appropriate. Resident Harcus suggested putting logs along free skating area to discourage driving in the mud. Last winter there was a problem with the rink .in .that it wasn't real level and when it rained it made puddles.- Benke commented that the Mayor was opposed to getting into a pattern of changing parks every three.or four years. He is very cautious about maintenance items. If there is justification for. these changes he will be satisfied. Dahl agrees that we should .not change every three or four years but feels it is not the case at Hansen. Anderson-stated the reason for the changes at Hansen was to alleviate maintenance problems, not change the park. Benke asked if we should hold off on Hansen Park until CIP is determined. Anderson feels that since the plan is being done in-house, the Comprehensive-Park Plan will not be ready in time for CIP. He feels we should put things in 1981 that we know have to be done. Benke informed everyone that availability of capital funds is limited. If Veterans Park is renovated that may divert funds from Hansen or CIP. These options are being considered. Vets is being looked at for. redevelopment - office complex is being considered for area. north of the park which may mean the ball field may have to be moved. D. Historical Society Gunderman°ntroduced Joyce Kloncz from the New Brighton His- torical Society. She .wanted to share her ideas regarding the Historical Society'with..the Park Board. Joyce stated they have been meeting since January. Their main goal at this time is to have a museum. They are looking at the Soo Line Railroad Depot. site, The railroad plans`to move soon. They. feel. the museum should.: be in an accessible area. Would like it on the main-drag. Another possibility is putting it next to the railroad tracks or along.Hansen'Park. The shoe shop may be donated`to the Historical Society. There are 52 paid. members. A family membership is $.5.00. Joyce stated she would like to share her ideas with the park board so that they are informed. She also stated she would-like to get kids involved'- Scouts, etc. The Historical Society is writing a book. They have received a donation from Mrs. Beisswenger. It was mentioned that the slide presentation would be good-to show at the next Park.. Board meeting..
