9
To accept that classifi~zation you also accept the that Metro feels
should be in a Regional park. such regional parks being located on _a major
body of water; a. body of water that can facilitate active water recreation
...would have water access -fishing, swimming, canoing- , those types of
also then receiving
activity. The second classification for qualifying for(Met~opolitan funds.
Basically the development of the whole facility as I re//ttcall is somewehere between
1 a:ndL million dolalrs. The County portion requires very little money for
development a site that's not used very intensively. A nature
center the whole county park side is oriented to that nature center.
And basically then ~i.ll will have a. physical trail associated with it a camp
grnndd, I know Councilman W about the-term ball field, the term camp
ground here has the same connotation, basically, an open area of grass where
people would come and camp with tents and they would be-under the supervision,
These areas
of the director of the nature center. work with the Nature Center
on its programs, while the~z're at them as well as enjoy the educational
benefits of being involved. So most of .the money
will go to the
New Brighton City park .side and I guess you have to then decide whether or
not you want to qualify for Metropolitan funds Whether or not you want to
continue to be classified as a. Regional Park..and in doing so you accept, more
or less accept, certain activities along with it. That doesn't .necessarily
mean that .there. will have to be large power boats coming off of this launch
site. Metro, who has close associations with the Department of Natural Resources
a.re continually looking for lake access sites, access for boats. Now you can
classify boats in any size, in a.ny means of power, rowing or canoing or some
motors. But they're looking for lake access sites. Sites to get people onto
the lakes, whether it's for boating, whether it's for canoing, whether its for
fishing or sailing. They do want some sort of, they're looking for those 5art
kinds of facilities and they are looking for more and they would probably hat to
see one taken away because there is~iJ~~ any boat access, or existing lake access
site here. And they would probably hate to see one disa.ppea.r when they are
trying to-find .more in other parks in this county and other parks in the #hole
Metro area.. It's a. high priority in the schedule then.
