PARK BOARD MINUTES February 5, 1975 Board meeting was called to order by Chairman Gunderman at 8:03 p.m. Board members present: Cook, Dahl, Gunderman, Jasinski, Sullivan, Weissman and Council Representative Eagon. Board members absent: Smith. Others present: Chellney Bier and Jane Bissell, League of Women Voters; 29th Avenue park site residents; Vermont park site residents; Charles Corlett, Assistant Director and Maurice Anderson, Director of Parks and Recreation. Minutes of the January 9, 1975 Board meeting were received and approved with the following correction: Page 1 - Ice Arena. Should read: Dahl asked if it were a possibility to go ahead with a feasibility study that the funding standpoint might be a joint-finance operation as long as the arena is not just going to serve New Brighton. Agenda additions: Park Board Elections Ice Arenas Brightwood Hills Golf Course Pool. Programming - Letter was received from Barry Bauer, Community Education Coordinator, on January 8, 1975 regarding the programming of recreational pool activities to be handled by the Park and Recreation Departments. Programming responsibilities should begin June 1, 1975. It was explained by the Department that requests for pool use will be handled in same fashion as all building use requests and recreational swimming programs will be self-supporting. 29th Avenue Park Site - Department staff displayed to the Board and in erested area residents an engineering drawing of the 29th Avenue ar~~3. 16th Street N.W. park site as it now exists. It was explained that less alteration of the topography is being suggested because. of economic factors and in order to preserve more trees. Two options are being considered: 1) Street vacation of 29th Avenue N.W,, which would include island for purpose~~ of slowing traffic and having a pleasing visual effect. 2) No street vacation with some minor design modifications. Douglas Turnbull, 1582 28th Avenue N.W., stated that he took a poll regarding the street vacation. 10-15 families were polled and it was found that residents who voiced negatively did so very strongly as opposed to those who favored the street vacation. Much concern was placed on heavier traffic. on 28th and 29th Avenues. James Church, 1595 29th Avenue N,W., felt the vacation of 29th would seriously impede any emergency vehicle. Department informed the Board that the volume of traffic, according to estimates prepared by the Engineering Department, would probably decrease if the street were vacated. The reason being, the street would be strictly used by park users only.. Mr. and Mrs. Stich,.1573 29th Avenue N.W., were both definitely opposed to the street vacation.
