(2)
Dahl commented that she felt it would be valuable to establish such
trails in the parks and even possibly connect the parks.
It was pointed out that the Village has a unique situation in that
Freeway 69L1- and Rice Creek Road both bisect the Village and the only
available crossings of these two obstacles were county roads. These
county roads are very heavily traveled and would be difficult to
make safe for recreational biking. As an alternative, it was
suggested that recreational biking does not necessarily require a
trail that goes anywhere. In most cases bikers are seeking primarily
exercise and trails that even go in a circle may satisfy their needs.'
Dahl agreed, however, she stated that the trail using school sites
and parks as nodes would establish a pattern and provide not only
a facility for exercise but would also provide a safe route for
children who do use bikes to get to specific places.
Cook suggested the use of vehicle control devices such as cross-walk
lights as an aid for bikers crossing busy streets.
Smith agreed that safety was a problem and that a trail of some type
would be valuable.
The Board revievred the bike route which St. Anthony Village had
established recently. Their route merely indicated streets which
would provide a continuous trail through the Village. It is marked
by signs, not by any type of road marking or special facilities for
bikes.
Dahl suggested that any trails that the Village were to establish
should be lined up with St. Anthony's route if at all possible.
It was further suggested that St. Anthony be contacted to determine
how they ti~rent about establishing their route. Also Board members
ti~rere encouraged to consider potential bike routes by the next meeting.
Hagemeyer requested that the item be placed on the agenda for September
in an attempt to try to have something established for next spring.
Smith brought up the fact that Old Highr, lay 8 t~ras being upgraded and
suggested that some type of bike path facility be included in the
planning for this project.
Department Report
Department explained that there had been several items vrhich the
Board had requested to investigate over the past several months and
the opportunity had not presented itself to report back to the Board.
It was suggested that this opportunity be taken by the Board to ask
questions on these items which were of interest.
