µ ~ Purk Board Minutes
August 5, 1970
Page 3
2. The Village of New Brighton°s involvement in the ice arena site
awarded by Ramsey County to Shoreview was discussed. Mayor Bromand~r
explained that New Brighton`s basic purpose was to have the ice arena
in the west side of the County and if fault were found with the
Shoreview site, to suggest Pike Lake as an alternative. However, the
low budget type of facility planned and the lack of any priority for
New Brighton residents made it questionable as to whether or not we
really wanted the arena built in New Brighton. The Mayor stated that
the Shoreview site was easily accessible far New Brighton residents
and any arena we would build would be of a higher quality. Board
discussion concurred with the Mayor's position. Smith stated that if
New Brighton were to build an ice arena it should not try to approach
it as a self-sustaining facility but rather as providing service to
the residents.
3. A copy of the Council resolution officially naming Richard J.
Hansen Park was given to each Board member.
Additions to the Agenda:
Park Building
The chairman brought up for re-consideration the Board's intent with
respect to the park building at Richard J. Hansen Park. It was
explained that two alternatives were available to construct a
building with eventual expansion to a community center or to build
a self-contained shelter far immediate needs. Smith questioned the
advisability of putting a community center at Hansen Park. He asked
far consideration of the Long Lake site. Dahl stated that the original
plan by the Board called for construction of a shelter that could
either stand alone or be expanded. This does not lock the Board inter
the community center concept but does provide that opportunity should
it be desired. E. E. Fisher raised the question of one building serving
the two wide apart areas the hockey rinks and pleasure skating pond.
He suggested two shelters but withdrew the suggestion when the new
proposed building location, set into the knoll, was explained.
Hagemeyer stated that he felt it was not the time to start revising
plans and moved to reaffirm the Board's recommendation to the Council
that the building at Richard J. Hansen Park be a unit which can be
used as self-contained park shelter but with provision for its
incorporation as part of a community center. Weissman seconded -
Motion carried
The question of funding was discussed and use of liquor store profits
was suggested as a possibility.
