March 3, 1982 Park Board Meeting Page 2 Ken Simons, Ramsey County Landscape Architect, reviewed :contents of the master plan. He stated that the draft plan is a staff document, it has not yet been approved. It is a starting point, a working document. No design .details are included. When he started working on this, his directive was consolidating the parcels into one regional park site. The design has followed along those lines. He displayed maps of the park and explained the plans for .the various areas. Most of .the people who use the park will be from New Brighton, Shoreview, Arden Hills, Roseville and Mounds-View. People may come from ouside this service area also. The total population of the area to be served is approxi- mately 231,000. He said the two main goals of the park are to provide activities for people using the park and to preserve it. Simons went over the different areas of the park. Development Concept Simons stated the different. areas of the.-park: Wildlife Sanctuary .Large Group Picnic Area Small Group Picnic Area .Swimming Beach Boat Launch Interpretive Area Day Camp Fishing Docks Simons said development will not take-place if the money for maintenance is not available. Nature Interpretive Area No .nature center (.building) is planned. The nature interpretive area is about 34 acres. Large Group Area About 300 people-can use. For Church .groups, etc. Parking for 150 cars, [~l.ill have pavilion, kitchenette and .toilets. Also games area, scattered picnic tables throughout the area. Overflow area can be used for games or parking. There is also a waterfowl. sanctuary. Any area where there is con- struction planned is in an area that is already .disturbed. A resident asked if alcoholic beverages would be .allowed in the park. Simons responded there is a policy which governs alcohol but it would be allowed.
