YOUTH. (CONTINUED) PAGE 3 After School The numbers for after school programs have leveled off the last couple years due, in part, to some repetition of activity. It is difficult to program for all ages with .the available space and to reach the most receptive age for a particular group activity. We firy to keep the fee low, therefore, finding qualified instructors for low pay is a problem. It appears now with the distric 's cutbacks that we may have more options for use of available after school space. Firearms Safety Since this is a popular class and it is limited, the numbers have remained fairly consistent. We did try to offer a summer class this year with the intent of allowing students to complete the course prior to any hunting seasons. This class however was not well attended so in the .future we will stick to our spring and fall offerings-only. Tots and Tikes The quality of the Tots and TykES programisreflected in the increase in number of participants. 1982 we .included 6 yr. olds in the program and had 2 time slots. In 1983 we again included 6 year oldsbut returned to one time slot. The 7 week program is a real bargain for $10 .and will continue to be offered at our park shelters as part of our summer playground program. Trips In 1983 seven youth trips were offered in conjunction with summer playground.. The trips were open to St. Anthony .residents as well. The key to planning successful trips is keeping the cost affordable while offering a few new ideas to compliment the always popular trips. In 1984 we are planning to organize more trips with the pre-school age child in mind as their parents are supportive of field trip experiences. Kite and Fishing Clinic These two clinics were new offerings as a one class meeting. There was a small indication of interest in both areas, so we decided to offer them on a fee supported basis, The fishing clinic .will be offered again. At ..this time. we areas't sure about. the kite clinic. YOUTH/ADULT .PROGRAMS Swimming Lessons Participation in swimming lessons stays pretty consistent over the years. This year might be higher because more people from Arden Hills who used to go to Johanna have decided to go to Highview. Plus our reputation is very good and we've had a stable staff over the last several years so a lot of people keep coming back and tell- others.. Over the last couple of years the Community Education Education Dept. of #621 has also listed our pool schedule in most of their brochures which helps others in the district be aware of our swimming offerings,
