Historic Preservation Area
a. Amendment Action: The 1982 Master Plan proposes that the ,existing boat
launch site on the sout h shore of Long Lake be re located to an area on
the east shore of the l ake approximately 1/4 mile south of the swimming
beach. This " amendment action" proposes that the area designated in the
Master Plan as the site for the boat launch, inst ead be designated as a
"HISTORICAL PR ESERUATIO N AREA".
b. Amendment Justification: The subject 8 acre area contains foundation
remnants of several structures that had been associated with the Twin
City Stockyards (circa-late 1880's) such as an ice house, pump house,
water tower, round house and turntable. Due to the scattered locations
of the foundations, it would be difficult to preserve and maintain the
visibility of the remnants without sacrificing the design integrity of
the boat launch facility. It is likely that the proposed access road
and parking lot would require the burying or demolition of the founda-
tions.
Since the Stockyards had an early influence on the settlement of New
Brighton and the establishment of the meat packing industry in the Twin
Cities area, it seems to be an appropriate course of action to preserve
the subject foundations for historic interpretation and viewing by the
public.
The cost of restoration, preservation and interpretation of the subject
foundations would be borne by the New Brighton Area Historical Society.
c.
