August 6, 1986 Park Board Minutes
B. Veterans Park Update
Seward asked how many mens teams play on V ts.
Anderson said about 8 teams.
Page 3
Anderson said he sent the Park Board acopy of the Council
Report on Veterans. On Page 3 is a proposed development
schedule. The change is there will not be any development
in 1986.. Will have to move '86 development to '87.
Anderson said he has contracted with Braun Engineering to do
some sil testing. Where the shelter building is scheduled
to go, they found 26 feet of peat - too much to build on.
The building will have to be-moved to either side.- If the
building is moved to the northwest it is too close to homes.
It will probably be moved to the east. Anywhere to the south,
the peat gets worse. Cost for the soil testing was $2,500.
No major changes needed in the plan if the shelter building
is moved, except shifting play area and pond to adapt to
relocated building.
Eichers asked what objection St. John's had about leaving
the backstop in the same position as it is .now.
Anderson said there would be wasted area. The ball diamond would
dominate the park. From a park planning standpoint the L-6 plan
works best.
Anderson said the residents are not concerned about the direction
of the ball diamond. They are concerned about the 3rd Ave.
closing.
Olson commented that she has had an opportunity to see Roseville's
concert grove area and she said that one and also the one in
Hopkins are getting a lot of use.
Anderson said yes, that kind of activity is coming back.
Williams. said Lake Harriet draws thousands of people.
Johnson said that if 3rd Ave. is vacated, he recommends the
path be continued instead of ending at the parking lot.
Anderson said that was a good suggestion.
Van Hatten said it could be used for bikes too.
Carlson said it would be a good safety factor.
Van Hatten said he didn't see a comment about 3rd Ave. in
Father Jerry's letter.
Anderson said he is staying away from that issue.
