June 4, 1986 Park Board .Minutes Page 3
B. Long Lake Advisory Committee
Carlson said. he never received notice of the meeting. Anderson
said that may explain why there was low attendance. Anderson
said no action was taken because of the light turn out. Did
talk about the grand opening for the beach.
Carlson thanked Jodelle for doing a good job of taking the
Park-Board minutes.
V. New Business
A. Veterans Park Renovation
See discussion under Council Report
B. Long Lake Beach Grand Opening
Anderson stated that the date for the grand opening has changed.
There was a meeting with Ramsey County and the group took a
tour of the park, later they talked about the maintenance of
the park. The County has done far more with purchasing and
installing equipment than we expected. The development of
turf area is very slow to come. Cabinets not delivered yet.
Fencing not in, probably will be July 1st.
Anderson said the grand opening would have to be delayed about
3 weeks until some of these projects are complete. The beach
will open on June 7th but the grand opening delayed. Want
input from the Park Board on the guest list for the grand
opening. Plans are to invite: The Park Board, Long Lake
Advisory Committee, Metropolitan Open Space Commission,
Ramsey County Commissioners, old Park Board and Council
members in 1969. Also local dignitaries; Vento, Durenburger,
etc. and all elected and appointed officials. Will use the
traditional sources to distribute information; newspapers,
cable TV, flyers. There will be events for kids, including
water games. Architects will host a reception at Brandywine
for 20-30 people (mostly elected and appointed people for
that). The grand opening will be the weekend before or
after the 4th of July. It depends on when the fencing is in.
There will also be a rescue demonstration by Park and Recreation
staff, Police and rescue squad.
Johnson said he has seen alot of shopping centers fail because
they open too soon and people are dissappointed. Recommend having a
sign-posted that includes a list of developments scheduled for
the future so there will not be that disappointment.
Van Hatten asked if the beach will be gratis from June 7 until
the grand opening.
Anderson said no, only gratis for 22-3 weeks.
Anderson said it would be tough to charge until the fence is up.
