3
November 4, 1987 Park Board Minutes
Anderson said that even if the Fire Department took
over Parkview and New Brighton took over some of the
middle school/high school, there would still be space
available for. these other programs to continue.
Anderson said the middle school/high school has good
accessibility too.
Eichers said he feels this idea would make more sense
than trying to start from scratch. This should be
explored.
Anderson said the Park Board has looked and know what
is out there. Would like some suggestions from the
Park Board to the Council.
Anderson said this facility is very close to New
Brighton. We have talked about possibilities with
Mounds View, Shoreview and Arden Hills but these are
not likely. Did have a talk with Shoreview, they are
considering a community center but they would not be
interested in a joint effort with New Brighton.
Eichers asked if there is enough parking.
Kalina said there had been talk at one time about
adding more parking on the west side.
Eichers asked what kind of uses New Brighton would
get from that facility.
Anderson said a senior center - place to play cards,
meeting rooms, a room for tumbling/dance, gym use,
pool use is critical. We probably wouldn't need more
than one floor (5 or 6 rooms). If we moved some
programs into that site, St. Anthony Community
Services would probably move into that building and
we could run more joint programs (we are doing some
joint programming now).
Johnson asked if there would be a possibility of
having wedding/anniversary receptions in there.
Anderson said not likely but it depends on St.
Anthony's ordinances, etc.
MOTION BY VAN HATTEN, SECONDED BY EICHERS, TO PURSUE
THE POSSIBILITY OF A JOINT FACILITY WITH THE SCHOOL
DISTRICT OF ST. ANTHONY AND THE CITY OF ST. ANTHONY.
