October 7, 1987 Park Board Minutes
Page 5
Johnson asked what if several communities (Mounds View,
Arden Hills, Shoreview, New Brighton and Ramsey County)
planned something jointly at Long Lake Park? Have a joint
powers agreement. We would be .drawing from a greater area.
Williams said some of the other communities are too fiscally
conservative.
Anderson said Shoreview is considering a community center
and Roseville is in the preliminary investigation.
Johnson said an ice arena is something that is always talked
about.
Anderson said you would lose money.
Blomquist said the New Brighton taxes are going up and other
community fees as well, can't see that residents would
support a community .center.
Johnson said that's why the joint involvement might work.
Carlson asked why Arden Hills would put in money for a
community center in New Brighton.'
Anderson said people from New Brighton use the Brooklyn
Center Community Center.
Anderson said if the joint effort were to work, Mayors and
Ramsey County officials needs to get excited about it. The
big push needs to come from them, it needs political
support. Anderson said the idea has some merit.
Johnson said we have looked into the Community Center idea
and find that the only feasible way would be on a joint
venture in the regional park because we are drawing from a
much larger group.
Carlson asked if any of the residents are being deprived of
something that they can't get through the School District or
some other way.
Anderson said he sees a need for meeting rooms and gym
space. Residents would benefit from this.
Rose added that senior citizen groups are using churches for
meeting areas.
Johnson said once you have a facility, people will be drawn
and it will be used.
