June 3, 1987 Park Board Minutes
B. Discussion of Community Center
Page 4
At the last Council goal setting meeting there was some
discussion about a community center. .The communities that are
looking into a community center are in the $3 million range.
This includes one ice rink, pool, and meeting rooms and
offices. The council said not to get hung up on the community
center being a building, but look at things that could be done
to keep the idea going in a decentralized set of activities.
Want to know if the Park Board has any comments.
Williams said the facility doesn't have to be in New Brighton.
The Park Board could visit some community centers to see what
there is and what New Brighton people might like and how we
could meet needs without having our own community center.
Anderson said the City of Shoreview is investigating the
possibility of building a community center.
Carlson commented that Brooklyn Center does not have a lake
so therefore they have a pool. They also hold art classes,
etc. in the building but New Brighton may have things they
don't have and we could-add to what we already provide.
Blomquist said that there is a proposed racquetball club on
Old Central and Rice Creed Road in Fridley.
Seward said there is already a lot out there that we could be
using..
Van Hatten asked if there is a need.
Anderson said that's what we need to find out and if there is,
how do we meet it.
Seward said a survey could be taken in the New Brighton Focus.
Carlson said it's hard for people to know what they want if
they don't know what there is presently available.
Eichers asked if the old Community Center at the old New
Brighton Elementary School-site got used.
The Park Board responded yes.
Seward asked if we should be looking at recreational/athletic
use or meeting use. He felt more meeting use was needed.
Carlson said not necessarily.
